“Look what I’m whippin’ up”: Childish Gambino’s “This Is America” debuts at #1 on “Billboard” Hot 100

RCA RecordsChildish Gambino‘s smash hit “This Is America” has debuted at number one on Billboard‘s Hot 100, making it the rapper’s first #1 on the chart. 

It’s also debuted at number one on Billboard‘s Hot R&B /Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs, marking Gambino’s first #1 on both of those charts as well. 

As a result, Childish knocks Drake‘s “Nice for What” from the top spot to number two and also effectively ends Drizzy’s reign of 15 weeks at number one on the Hot 100. 

As of Monday afternoon, the video for “This Is America” by Donald Glover‘s music alter-ego has earned a mammoth 110 million views on YouTube since its May 5 release. 

Those numbers dwarf those of any of his other videos released on the platform.  

“This Is America” is Childish Gambino’s first release on RCA Records.   

The visual for the track makes a powerful statement about race, social justice, police brutality, politics and gun violence in the U.S.

Celebrities including Jaden SmithJanelle MonaeCommon and Empire‘s Taraji P. Henson have praised Childish for his socially conscious visual.
