Timbaland Inducted Into Songwriters Hall of Fame; SZA, Diane Warren Earn Special Honors

Timbaland, R.E.M.,Steely Dan, Hillary Lindsey, and Dean Pitchford were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame’s 2024 class on Tuesday night (June 11) during a star-studded event. At the New York Marriott Marquis, Michael Stipe, Peter Buck, Bill Berry, and Mike Mills performed “Losing My Religion,” which captivated the audience. Kevin Bacon recreated his Footloose role to honor the title track’s creator, R.E.M. reunited after 13 years, and SZA said receiving an award for songwriting “validates my entire career.” SZA, the most nominated performer at this year’s Grammys, performed “Snooze” acoustically with Carter Lang. Nile Rodgers, chairman of the Songwriters Hall, presented SZA and received a standing ovation for calling out Spotify for not prioritizing songwriters. Five years after becoming the first female rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall, Missy Elliott honored her musical partner Timbaland.

Irving Azoff, Steely Dan’s longtime manager, told hilarious stories about the band, while Trey Anastasio paid tribute to Donald Fagen and Walter Becker with a stirring performance.The night culminated with 15-time Oscar nominee Diane Warren, who was elected into the Songwriters Hall in 2001 and won the Johnny Mercer Award Tuesday night.
