  • Kamala Harris 50 Years Of Hip Hop
  • VP Kamala Harris hosted a hip-hop 50th-anniversary celebration with pioneers and stars. Lil Wayne, Common, Jeezy, Fat Joe, Remy Ma, Doug E. Fresh, Slick Rick, MC Lyte, Wale, and Too Short performed on the front lawn.
  • Hip-hop’s 50th birthday has led to many anniversary events this year. The genre’s creation is traced to a party on August 11, 1973, where DJ Kool Herc deejayed in the Bronx, NYC.
  • Harris called hip-hop the ultimate American art form that shapes popular culture. “Hip-hop is American culture,” she said. Lil Wayne spoke at the “50 Years of Hip-Hop” event in Washington, D.C. After his set, he thanked the audience and said, “Can’t believe I’m here.”
  • VP and her husband, Doug Emhoff, boogied from their VIP area toward the back. Saturday’s celebration was a collab with Recording Academy’s Black Music Collective and Live Nation Urban.
